In addition to offering a range of services relevant to the needs of industry, MurdochLINK can assist organisations in tapping into high potential licensing and spin-off opportunities.

“Having a commercially-focused point to sieve through a large and varied pool of resources enables us to meet the ever-changing needs of both private and government organisations,” said Tim Morrison, Director of Murdoch’s Division of Research and Development which broadly oversees the private limited entity.

“This is particularly important as an increasing number of universities and other educational institutions realise that they too are able to compete and respond to the needs of industry.”

A recent professional training course held by MurdochLINK was the Strategic Management and Leadership Skills Program in July this year. MurdochLINK hosted the two-week workshop which was specially designed for senior officers of the Malaysian Ministry of Education.

The course brought together lecturers, principals and management consultants from Murdoch University and various other educational institutions. This provided the Malaysian Education officers with an overview of education in Australia and discussed current issues facing the Australian education system, including the education of cultural minorities.

In another project, Murdoch’s Centre for Phytophthora Science and Management (CPSM) and MurdochLINK were awarded over $1.6m by the Department of the Environment and Heritage to conduct research into the resistance of the root-rot (dieback) fungus Phytophthora cinnamomi to Australian native vegetation, and how to contain or eradicate it in Australia.

This plant pathogen is listed as a key threatening process under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, and the Commonwealth is spending millions of dollars to combat it.

This is the second out of three projects awarded to MurdochLINK and CPSM by the Department relating to research into Phytophthora cinnamomi and has paved the way for PhD Scholarships from Murdoch University.
