state-of-the-art chiropractic clinic opens at murdoch university

Australia’s most technologically advanced chiropractic clinic is now operating at Murdoch University’s South Street campus.

The clinic, which has 11 treatment rooms and a rehabilitation centre, offers physiological therapeutics, ultrasound and laser treatment and electrostimulation.

The Murdoch University clinic is the first chiropractic teaching centre in the nation with a digital x-ray facility. The clinic is staffed by 12 highly experienced Government registered chiropractors who supervise all aspects of patient care performed by final year students.

Clinic director Dr Keith Simpson said the clinic, which had treated around 700 patients since opening in August, placed a strong emphasis on active rehabilitation rather than just passive treatments. He said patients were taught a range of strengthening exercises to prevent recurring injuries.

“We place a strong emphasis on active rehabilitation rather than just passive treatments.”

Dr Simpson said students who worked at the clinic were also given intensive instruction in the innovative Graston technique for resolving soft tissue injuries.

Their instructor, Dr Timothy Stark, is a senior lecturer at the School of Chiropractic and was the only certified Graston instructor in Australia. Dr Stark had successfully used the Graston technique to treat athletes competing at national and international events such as the Olympic Games. “The Graston technique is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation that enables clinicians to break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions,” Dr Simpson said.

Murdoch University opened the School of Chiropractic in 2002. Students enrolled in the five year course enjoy a patient based integrated curriculum and have the opportunity to interact with practising chiropractors and other health disciplines across campus.

The clinic is open six days per week and welcomes public patients. Telephone: (08) 9360 1202.
