![]() Untitled Painting # 12 Trevor Vickers 2007 | acrylic on canvas | 122 x 91cm | accession # 782 purchased by the Art Board 2007 - Murdoch University Art Collection Trevor VICKERSborn 1943, Adelaide, South Australia Trevor Vickers paintings are patently successful investigations reflecting his own unique brand of abstraction. Vickers' symmetrical geometry is concerned with self- referential meaning and reflection rather than what may at first appear to be studies in conceptual theory. In this sense Vickers is a true modernist with formalist concerns in the complex nature of composition, design and perception. Meticulously composed, these paintings are studies in artistic discipline. They are well grounded in a deep awareness of colour principles which when operating at their optimum, oscillate the viewer's eyes into a spasmodic dance. His compositions hold the eye in a bifocal manner, shifting focus from colour plane to colour plane within the framed canvas. Vickers' is a serious painter who focuses on his personal development as an artist and doesn't primarily paint for the art market, instead he demands much of himself and allows the viewer to rely upon his or her own sensory devices. It is for this reason that his paintings are often untitled. Untitled Painting #12 consists of a palette of sublime greys and an arresting red. This painting is one of three works from his 2007 exhibition which subtly shift the same composition in a variety of directions simply by slightly altering the tonal value of the grey. Despite this formal, controlled method of working, Vickers' paintings are still aesthetically mesmerising to look at. He is a highly respected artist who has demonstrated an exemplary level of artistic achievement both personally and publicly.
