I have enjoyed the short stories of the American writer Raymond Carver for many years, attracted to the deceptively simple writing that is able to convey powerful emotion and pathos in so few words. His stories depict ordinary people doing the best they can with what they have, people who are feeling their way in the dark and who dream that perhaps next week things will get better. It is the strong sense of isolation that Carver evokes that I wanted to portray in my pictures, to capture a sense of alienation and longing in a visual form. |
