Andrew DALY

born 1964, Perth, Western Australia
lives and works Perth, Western Australia

Andrew Daly is a Western Australian painter well known for his fine execution of still life subjects and quietly reflective portraits. Unlike most contemporary Western Australian artists, Daly’s painting style is influenced by traditional techniques and he is therefore relatively solitary in his artistic approach. Daly is particularly inspired by the intensity of the Italian Renaissance painting era and his portrait subjects often reflect this with pensive and deeply reflective expressions.

The subject matter of In the Round is typical of the interior and portrait paintings the artist is known for. This painting is a self portrait depicted through the refection of a convex mirror. It is an unusual, but very dynamic composition. The painting’s background features the artist's Northbridge painting studio, complete with a table, shelf with painting equipment, jars, an easel and light entering from a window which creates theatrical shadow play across the ceiling over head.
